19:00 THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY

For decades, functional programmers have been saying they know the way to the future.

Clearly, since imperative languages are still far more popular, they've been wrong.

However, they've also clearly been right, as functional programming's advantages have become increasingly obvious. Is it possible to combine the two models?

Scala is one language that does this, but Java is also continuing its journey of learning from functional languages and carefully adding features from them. With Maurice we will review what Java has learned from functional languages, what it can still learn, and how its added features compare to Scala's original ones.

20:15 JAVA COLLECTIONS PUZZLERS

The Java Collections Framework is the most widely used API – probably in your application too. You use it all the time, but do you really know your way around it?

You can be surprised even by common classes like ArrayList and HashMap, let alone by the handling of null values or immutability in lesser-known classes.

In this interactive session Maurice will be joined by local Java software developer Hanna Golikova, to look at some obvious code and its less-than-obvious effect. It’s up to you to guess the outcome! But everything will be explained, and you’ll end up knowing how to avoid pitfalls, both well-known and obscure, in using the Collections Framework.
