Context, Content, UX, UI, IA and Somewhere in Between - Jane Pyeon and Grace Lau

The talk will discuss the relationship between context and information architecture(IA). It will explore how understanding context transforms IA decisions and impacts the overall user experience. Within the realm of context, the talk will highlight cultural context inclusive of language, cultural beliefs, and traditions. It will address the importance of creating structurally sound information architecture that is inclusive, engaging, and appropriate for the product and target audience.

About Jane

Jane is a UI/UX designer with experience as a design team of one in a start up environment. With an unconventional path to a career in design, Jane has also been a translator, an English teacher, and a barista. I'm Their First Designer! Now What? - Samantha Vivonia

The product design field is expanding rapidly as more companies recognize the benefits of design thinking. As a result, many are open to hiring their first UX designer. But what's it like to be the pioneer of product design in a small company? How can you ensure success in an environment where little is pre-existing and known? Here are some useful tips from someone who has been in this situation multiple times over several years.

About Samantha

Lead product designer at HOTB Software, a small design agency / dev shop / VC firm based in Irvine, California. They have designed, built, and launched several tools in the FinTech, HealthTech, and government space which millions of users nationwide rely on. Sam is passionate about design systems, lean design methodologies, and helping bootcamp grads break into tech. Outside of work, you’ll find her at the local theater doing improv and standup comedy.

New Architectures of Interaction: ArtCenter IxD Student Showcase

How are new technologies like mixed reality and voice changing our information structures and our experiences with them? How can we learn from these unique mediums and leverage their distinct attributes to design interactions that while unfamiliar are intuitive and compelling? This showcase presents work from students in ArtCenter’s Interaction Design Department, who explore the challenges and opportunities for how we might move, speak, and meet differently within emergent information spaces.

A Typology of Maps: Using Cartography to Communicate Site Structure - Nick Bauch

Deciding to use a map on a web page is not the end of a content decision, rather, it is the beginning. Not all maps are created equally: there are questions of user cognitive load, internal return-on-investment, the medium of the map, and not least aesthetic styling. After you’ve decided that a map is necessary, how do you decide what type of map best solves the problem you’re trying to solve? Coming from the perspective of Esri’s Cartographic Experience Designer, this talk marries information architecture taxonomy—i.e. the logical/conceptual grouping of ideas—with cartographic design principles. Often overlooked in IA proper, the details of cartography can go a long way in tacitly amplifying one’s site structure for users.

About Nicholas

Nicholas Bauch is a geographer and artist who brings together spatial thought and creative media production. While working at Stanford University, his pioneering web-based geography, “Enchanting the Desert,” helped set a template for publishing born-digital scholarship in academic presses. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UCLA, and an M.F.A. in Visual Art from the University of Minnesota, where his 2021 photo-gravure artist book was acquired by the Gorman Rare Art Books and Media Collection. He works as a Cartographic Experience Designer at Esri, and in his spare time likes taking his kids to retro arcades.
