Postcode Portals - cypher spotting in south Brum

There are clues in our familiar built environment that can help us see the world differently, opening portals to different times and places. One of these clues is the ubiquitous red postbox on your street corners. Royal cyphers on postboxes are ornate embossed symbols that tell us when the postbox was installed and which monarch was on the throne at the time.

We'll visit some of the postboxes of south Birmingham, using these cyphers to take us on a journey through the history of suburban development, considering the important cultural and political events of each monarch's reign. As we zigzag back and forth through time we'll also think about postbox colours, locations and the changing role of postboxes in a hyper-connected, digital world.

Will we be able to find postboxes for each of the seven monarchs since Victoria? How will we date our postboxes if the monarchy is abolished? Come along and explore these questions together.

We will also be making use of the postboxes for their intended function and invite you to think of someone you'd like to send a message to and make sure you have their address on the day.
