Research Seminar: Professor Brice Dattee
Title: Future-making and the circulation of organizational power
Abstract: In this paper, we bring together work on future-making and power to examine how future-making can lead to the circulation of power. While the connection between future-making and power has been explored in terms of how power dynamics affect future-making, there has been little work on how future-making can affect the distribution of power in an organization. Drawing on a case of a foresight intiative carried out by the canton of Geneva, we explore how future-making resulted in the circulation of power and what mechanisms underlie this unexpected result. Given the increasing interest in future-making and temporality in organization and management theory, our study makes important contributions to our understanding of how future-making can result in changes in the power positions of different coalitions involved in the process.
