Let's go yum cha!
Literally meaning "drink tea" in Cantonese, going to yum cha is an important Hong Kong breakfast/brunch tradition and dining experience. For the uninitiated, dim sum can be intimidating. Through a workshop focused on design thinking activities, designers and non-designers alike can practice concept modeling, ethnographic research, and mapping. You get a chance to think about what it means to design for accessibility and usability through a yum cha experience.
This is a uniquely-designed event that focuses on niche experiences. Whether you come only for the food or stay for the workshop, you'll walk away with:
- A better understanding of design thinking, journey mapping
- A set of "building blocks" for creating a flow for new experiences
- Fun ways for understanding user needs

WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT UX OF DIM SUM
San Gabriel Valley UX events are focused on active learning, sharing and connecting as a community. As a UX of Dim Sum event, we're still figuring things out and fine-tuning the workshop experience. As the second iteration, we rely heavily on you the attendee to learn about the challenges and questions you have about approaching and thinking about user experience, service design, and content strategy.
What you'll get when you attend UX of Dim Sum
We'll provide you with plenty of opportunities to learn, network, and have fun -- it's a two-part workshop. We'll start with the food. You'll receive a workbook to take notes and sketch your observations of the environment, the players, the challenges, and areas of opportunity.
In part 2, we'll relocate to a workshop venue nearby. It's a 4-minute walk from the restaurant. Armed with stickies and markers, we'll map the domain of dim sum and talk through how objects are connected, structured, and related to the customer/you!
You'll come away with a full belly and a bigger appetite for UX.
Who should attend UX of Dim Sum
If you're interested in UX, customer experience, product design, communication design, and food. Bring your parents, friends, and kids. Dim sum is a group event.
Unfortunately, dim sum is NOT particularly vegan or gluten-free friendly. Those who are allergic to shellfish will have limited options.

What does my registration fee include?
If you register for the Dim Sum portion only, your registration covers - cost of food + tea + gratuity to the restaurant
- printing and workshop supplies
If you are registering for the workshop, your registration covers:
rental space for the workshop component
printing and workshop supplies
event registration fees
free WI-Fi throughout the workshop area
All profits help fund SGVUX events.
How can I pay for UX of Dim Sum?
We accept all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. We also take Venmo (payable to @theSGVUX).
Can my friends/family attend for Dim Sum only?
Yes, of course. Dim sum is usually a family/group event.

Can I cancel or transfer my registration if I can't attend?
Yes, you can transfer your registration to someone else. Just get in touch (sangabrielvalleyux@gmail.com) and we'll update the ticket information.

Parking
If planning to go for dim sum only
Arrive by 9:30 am
Some walking (0.2 miles, about 4 minutes) is involved if you're joining for both dim sum and workshop. Please wear comfortable shoes.
If staying for the workshop
Free parking is available at the underground parking garage on the cross of N. Atlantic Blvd and Garvey Ave.
The American English College is located on the ground floor - to the right of the escalators leading up and out of the underground parking. Parking is complimentary - no time limit or cost!
If you're staying for both dim sum and workshop
I recommend that you park at the underground parking garage near the American English College. The parking by the restaurant is horrendous and must be avoided! There will be groups of us walking to the workshop venue. Again, the free parking is available at the underground parking garage on the cross of N. Atlantic Blvd and Garvey Ave. The American English College is located on the ground floor - to the right of the escalators leading up and out of the underground parking.
Kid-friendly room OR free childcare on-site during workshop
During the workshop, if you need a space where your kid just wants to sit and play, we have rented an adjacent classroom. Volunteers with first-aid and CPR training are available if you would like. We will have interactive/creative activities prepared.
At the same time, kids are welcome to attend the workshop as long as they aren’t disruptive. For instance, Grace's 9-year-old son will be attending as well.
About SGVUX
SGVUX is a monthly meetup that usually takes place every first Tuesday evening of the month.
A partnered event with the 626 Design and Product Entrepreneurs, the Los Angeles User Experience meetup, the Asian Creative Network: Los Angeles, and LA DIA Design, LLC.
A volunteer-led event. Lead the change you want to see in your community. Your ticket helps offset the cost of food, drinks, signs, supplies, and venue rental fees. All proceeds help fund SGVUX events.
