Talk: Leading At Scale
Leading and delivering at scale is hard. We have incomplete knowledge, imperfect interactions with colleagues and customers and unseen influences drive unexpected outcomes.
This is not a new problem. It's one of the oldest. We'll look at what we can learn from the leadership principles used by the Prussian military in the 1870s and how they are and can be used today's internet economy. Inspired by the work of Stephen Bungay, his book The Art of Action and others.
Speaker: Ceri Shaw (Head of Product Engineering - Innovation & Change, M&G Prudential) @cerishaw
Talk: SOLID Leadership
Whilst slightly contrived, there is something to be said for basing your technical leadership on how you'd write your code. In this light-hearted talk, I'll translate the software engineering SOLID principles into leadership and use the results to highlight some of the important lessons I've learned on my way to becoming a better technical leader.
Speaker: Valerie Dryden (Director of Engineering, Care Sourcer) @outragedracoon
Talk: Radical Candor
People are complicated and working together is hard. By acknowledging this and taking care of the needs of others and sharing context, we can avoid unnecessary conflict. Radical Candor is an approach to this that gives us techniques we can use to better communicate with others and in turn work more effectively together.
