Additional Information

ABOUT THE SPEAKER – Fiona Shaw
For an actress best known for her classical stage work in London theatres and on Broadway, Fiona Shaw is suddenly all over our screens. In 2018/19, she has popped up on TV in Killing Eve and Mrs Wilson, and in cinemas in Lizzie and Colette. In July 2019, she made a guest appearance in the feverishly-awaited second series of Fleabag, as well as reprising her role in Killing Eve’s second series, having won a BAFTA in May 2019 for her role in the first series.

Fiona graduated from University of Cork and then trained at RADA, collecting a Gold Medal in her final year. She made her name at the RSC and the National Theatre, where she shone in some of the great tragic roles, including Medea, Electra, Richard II, Mother Courage and Hedda Gabler. In 2015, she produced two operas for the Glyndebourne Festival, The Rape of Lucretia by Britten and Cendrillon by Jules Massenet.

Her film credits include My Left Foot, The Butcher Boy and the Harry Potter series, where she played Aunt Petunia Dursley. Recently, Fiona seems to have become Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s muse-cum-mascot, with roles in both her TV spy thriller Killing Eve as icy Carolyn Martens, head of MI6’s Russian desk, and now as the anti-heroine’s therapist in her comedy Fleabag. Her pièce de résistance is her 37-minute recital from memory of an adaptation of T.S. Elliot’s Waste Land poem, which she has performed in venues from Wilton’s Music Hall to Madison Park.

Fiona has won many awards during her eclectic career, including four Olivier awards for ‘best actress’ in RSC and National Theatre productions, and an honorary CBE for services to drama. She was awarded a Litt D by TCD and is their Honorary Professor of Drama.
