ABOUT THE SPEAKER

During three decades as a television journalist Sir Martyn Lewis CBE anchored every mainstream national news programme on ITV & BBC TV, including News At Ten and the Six O’Clock News. He now balances extensive work in the voluntary sector with business activity – including starting his own company. Back in 1995 he founded the UK’s very first internet-based charity, the award-winning YouthNet, pulling together information, help and advice of every kind for 16-25 year-olds. (It recently merged with Get Connected to form “The Mix”, for which Martyn remains an ambassador).

His current charity roles include Chairman of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (part of the Honours system) and President of Fixers, which produces videos of “young people using their past to fix the future”. He recently served 6 years as Chairman of NCVO (the main umbrella group for the voluntary sector) and, as a long-time campaigner for "solutions-focused journalism", he remains Chair of NCVO’s “Constructive Voices” project, Patron of Positivenews.org.uk and a Director of IPSO (The Independent Press Standards Organisation). He is author of six books, including “Reflections On Success”, recently republished on Kindle.

His new company, YourBigDay Ltd, has just created a portfolio of unique video “time-capsules” for virtually every date and year over the last century – drawn from the Reuters and ITN archives, and delivered only online. (www.yourbigday.tv).

He is also a Director of PL Education, helping students from primary to higher education to improve how they learn and maximise their potential (www.myperformancelearning.com). Martyn was awarded a CBE in 1997 and a knighthood in 2016 for services to the voluntary sector.
