TCD Alumni North of England Branch Spring Excursion 2019

Join the TCD Alumni North of England Branch for their next Alumni Event in April, a walk through the parklands of Dunham Massey Hall and an illustrated talk by TCD alumnus Michael Hannon.

Date: Saturday 6th April

Time: 11.30am (walk), 1.30pm (lunch), 2.15pm (talk)

Location: Red House Farm, Dunham Massey, Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 5RL

We will meet at 11.30am at the front desk of Dunham Massey Hall for the walk (this part of the excursion is optional - you may join for just the lunch and talk if you choose). After the walk, we will head to The Red House Farm for lunch at 1.30pm in their upstairs rooms. Entry to Dunham Massey is free to National Trust members and lunch will be at your own expense.

At 2.15pm, we'll enjoy the fascinating story of ‘Mrs Findlay’s Broadwood Square Piano’, as Michael Hannon reveals uncanny links between Mrs Findlay’s family, who made their fortune in tobacco, and his mother’s family, the shipbuilders Dennys of Dumbarton.

About the Talk

Bought in 1977 on a whim for fifty pounds in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim, Mrs. Findlay’s Broadwood Square Piano, a bockedy old instrument, unearths a story of forbidden romance in Glasgow, a legal battle over a dowry and the reunification of two families. Michael Hannon is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and Sheffield University's former librarian. As the piano's strings and pedals are restored, he uncovers the history of a family and the airing of a sonata that had lain dormant for years.
