About our Speaker

Dr Cliona Hannon In the late 1990s, Cliona set up an innovative, year-long Foundation Course for young adults from working class backgrounds in Trinity College Dublin. In 2019, 30% of Trinity’s first year cohort was made up of students from underrepresented groups including those from working class, ethnic minority and refugee backgrounds, mature students and students with a disability.

In 2016, Cliona was appointed as Visiting Fellow – Course Director in Lady Margaret Hall (LMH), Oxford to adapt the TAP Foundation Course to that context.

Following the generous donation of 2 scholarships by the rapper Stormzy to enable 2 black students to study at Cambridge, and the launch by Cambridge University in 2018 of a 500 million campaign to resource a Transition Year for underrepresented student groups, it seems especially apposite to hear from Dr. Hannon how such a scheme can be set in motion.
