About the Talk
Prof. Jacob Weingreen, son of immigrant parents from Eastern Europe, entered Trinity on a scholarship despite having no formal education. He was appointed Chair of Hebrew in 1937 when fellow Jews were losing their jobs in academic institutions across Europe. In 1945, he was given a leave of absence from his university responsibilities to set up the education college at the Displaced Persons Camp at Bergen Belsen and after seeing the devastation of the Holocaust, he worked tirelessly for inter-communal relations based on scholarly and ethical interpretations of shared traditions. His Classical Hebrew Grammar was used by generations of students across the world and was translated into numerous languages.

His story resonates today with Trinity welcoming students from minority backgrounds and where those who have not taken the traditional route to third-level education are encouraged so they can fulfil their potential. Trinity remains an institution with a global focus and one which supports the activities of its diverse scholarly community. Weingreen’s academic legacy is evident as the study of Middle Eastern languages, history and religion is a growth area and where the victims of the Holocaust are remembered with annual commemorative events.
