Digital Works #14

1:00 – 5:00pm (social from 5pm onwards)

at The Jointworks, 62-64 Albion Street, Birmingham, B1 3EA

Welcome to Digital Works #14!

For the first in-person Digital Works event since the pandemic, we will be hosting a day focused on accessible digital experiences - a theme that’s really important to the work we’re all doing, and something we get asked about more and more. We often tell our clients that by making your digital experiences more accessible, you will be making them more usable by default.

We’ve got three brilliant speakers lined up to talk about this wide and varied topic - Chloe Tear, Caspian Turner and Will Gregg. You can read more about their talks in the schedule below.

We can’t wait to welcome you to The Jointworks, and if you have any questions just drop us an email and we’ll be in touch!

1:40pm – 3:05pm UTC
Session 1 - Chloe Tear

Chloe is a 24-year old disability blogger and freelance writer who also works as a full-time content designer in the charity sector. In her blog she documents her lived experiences as a disabled young woman. Chloe has had Cerebral Palsy from birth, but became visually impaired during her first year of university and has recently been registered as severely sight impaired (formally known as blind).

Chloe strives to share what it’s like to be a disabled young person navigating the world of education, employment and life in general - and she’ll be bringing this ambition to Digital Works where she’ll be talking about her interactions with digital and online experiences.

3:15pm – 4:15pm UTC
Session 2 - Caspian Turner: Beyond compliance. Meeting people’s needs

Caspian Turner's name will be familiar to many of you already. Our lovely ex-Head of Strategy and Consulting is now a Digital Accessibility Consultant and Director of Accessible by Design - a digital accessibility consultancy that aims to help arts and cultural organisations design\, build and maintain accessible websites. Caspian has held in-house roles at Glyndebourne and Southbank Centre, before working as a Web Implementation Specialist at Tessitura Network and most recently working with us! He’s also a member of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals and an accredited Web Accessibility Specialist.

Caspian's talk is 'Beyond compliance. Meeting people’s needs'.

Compliance should not be the primary aspiration or primary goal of making your work and experiences accessible. It should be about providing your audiences with an excellent experience. Designing digital and in person experiences with consideration as to how human beings interact with them is critical to creating inclusive experiences that meet your audiences’ needs.

We’re going to cover some of the most frequently seen digital accessibility issues and findings from focus groups, covering lived experiences of booking and attending arts and cultural events in England. We’ll also cover what you can do to improve digital accessibility at your organisation.

4:30pm – 5:15pm UTC
Session 3 - Will Gregg

Will is going to be speaking about our accessible-first approach to building digital products and services, specifically in his work on our new(ish) online purchase pathway Viadukt.

He’ll demo some of these accessible features such as the work he’s done recently on seating plans and his future ambitions to build the most accessible purchase path. Accessibility is something we’re always learning new things about, especially from users, so he will also touch upon the process we take to usability testing to ensure we are being truly user-led and accessible-first.
