Talk Programme

Monday, May 18th

On the first day, we have three truly smashing speakers lined up for you:

Creativity In Cross-Cultural Innovation — Yiying Lu

We live in an increasingly borderless world in which creativity in cross-cultural innovation plays an important role in connecting businesses with a much wider global audience from different cultural backgrounds.

Yiying will tell us how we can create more business and cultural value by integrating creativity in our product, messaging, and delivery. By the end of this talk, you’ll be sure to have learned how to start creating design that bridges the gap between Art and Tech, Business and Culture, East and West.### Building With Jamstack: Keeping UIs And APIs Aligned —

Phil Hawksworth

Whether you’re using third-party services or developing your own APIs, leveraging them well from your UI can be challenging over long development projects.

In his talk, he’ll shed the light on some of the techniques you can use when working with serverless functions, proxies and Jamstack tools to help you build projects with confidence.

Accessible Typography — Mark Boulton

How do you go about choosing an accessible typeface, what things you need to look out for, what you need to avoid, and many other important aspects to consider?

He’ll be sharing his personal advice on how to use that particular typeface you want to use in the most accessible way. It will be a super-practical talk that covers a bit of type design as well as the details of typesetting.

Tuesday, May 19th

If you can’t make it on Monday due to a time zone or any other reason, no worries! On Tuesday, Mark Boulton will be joining in again (yeah!) and will be presenting the same talk as on Monday. Rachel Andrew and Mandy Michael will speak as well.

Fun With Browser And Sensor APIs — Mandy Michael

Developments in sensor and browser APIs have opened up many opportunities for your website to react and respond based on the users device, environment or input. There are many great sensor and browser APIs that you can take advantage of including light sensors, orientation and speech recognition.

Whether it’s a practical implementation of the Light Sensor API or abducting a cat with a combination of sensors, she’ll be looking at some simple code demos by exploring possibilities, tools and resources that are needed to create engaging and creative effects, visualizations and experiences.

Hello, Subgrid! — Rachel Andrew

We have had Grid Layout in browsers for two years — long enough for us to start to find the edges and discover things we really wish it could do. The biggest missing feature from Level 1 was Subgrid, which has become the main feature for Level 2 of the specification. In this talk, Rachel will introduce Subgrid alongside use cases, example code, and some thoughts on where we might see Grid heading in the future.
