Main Talk #1: Immutable Database Modeling in Python by Alex Favaro

ABSTRACT

Immutability in database models has a number of potential benefits, especially in financial systems, including transactional change logging, improved debuggability and auditability, and builtin support for history dependent business logic. In this talk we’ll consider some approaches to incorporating immutability into database models, discuss design tradeoffs, and propose a pattern for designing relational data models that leverage immutability. Finally, we’ll review an explicit but non-intrusive implementation of this pattern written in Python using SQLAlchemy.

BIO

Alex Favaro is an engineering manager at Affirm where he leads a team responsible for new product initiatives. He earned his B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford in 2012 and has worked at a variety of companies in Silicon Valley, including a 3 person startup and Google. His current interests lie at the intersection of FinTech, consumer lending, and personal finance.

Main Talk #2: TextRank in Python by Paco Nathan

ABSTRACT

PyTextRank is a pure Python open source implementation of TextRank, based on this 2004 paper -- a graph algorithm which produces ranked keyphrases from texts. Keyphrases are generally more useful than simple keyword extraction. PyTextRank integrates use of TextBlob and SpaCy for NLP analysis of texts, including full parse, named entity extraction, etc. It also produces auto-summarization of texts, making use of an approximation algorithm, MinHash, for better performance at scale. Overall, the package is intended to complement machine learning approaches -- specifically deep learning used for custom search and recommendations -- by developing better feature vectors from raw texts. This package is in production use at O'Reilly Media for text analytics.

BIO

Paco is the Director of the Learning Group at O'Reilly Media and an advisor for Amplify Partners -- with 30+ years tech industry experience, ranging from Bell Labs to early-stage start-ups. Known as a "player/coach" Data Scientist, with core expertise in machine learning, distributed systems, functional programming, cloud computing. Cited in 2015 as one of the Top 30 People in Big Data and Analytics by Innovation Enterprise.

Main Talk #3: Advanced data engineering patterns using Apache Airflow by Maxime Beauchemin

ABSTRACT

Analysis automation and analytic services is the future of data engineering! Apache Airflow's DSL makes it natural to build complex DAGs of tasks dynamically, and Airbnb has been leveraging this feature in intricate ways, creating a wide array of services as dynamic workflows. In this talk, we'll explain the mechanics of dynamic pipeline generation using Apache Airflow, and present advanced use cases that have been developed at Airbnb.

BIO

Maxime Beauchemin works at Airbnb as part of the Data Tools team, developing open source products that reduce friction to help generate insight from data. He is the creator and a leading maintainer of Apache Airflow incubating (a workflow engine) and Caravel (a data visualization platform). Before Airbnb, Maxime worked at Facebook on computation frameworks around engagement and growth analytics, at Yahoo; on social properties analytics, and at Ubisoft as a data warehouse architect.

SF Python is run by volunteers aiming to foster the Python Community in the bay area. Please consider making a donation to SF Python and saying a big thank you to Affirm for providing food, non-alcoholic drinks, and the venue for this Wed's meetup.

Our Feb sponsor Affirm is a next-generation consumer finance company providing shoppers with instant point-of-sale financing for online purchases. Started by PayPal co-founder Max Levchin, Affirm’s data-driven approach looks beyond a standard credit score to reach broader consumer populations. We are using modern technology to re-imagine and re-build core components of financial infrastructure from the ground up. We’re focusing on improving the lives of everyday consumers with less expensive, more transparent financial products.
