Additional Information

On Saturday, January 13th, SED Systems will be hosting a code retreat for U of S students on campus.

Come join your fellow students to practice the art of software development together. Write code, learn from others, teach someone else, and expand your network of friends who are passionate about their craft. Software developers of all skill levels and backgrounds are welcome!

Where: Room S320 (Windows/Linux Computer Lab)

When: Saturday, January 13. The sessions run all day, from 10:00 - 4:30. Please be there 10 minutes early to grab a coffee and sign in.

Cost: This event is free. Lunch and snacks will be provided. You must register here in advance, however, as there are limited spaces.

What to Bring: Bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn! We'll use the lab computers. You might want to bring a pen and paper.

What Do I Need to Know: No specific experience is necessary, other than familiarity with a programming language with a unit test framework. You can use any language you are comfortable in that has a development environment setup on the lab computers.

What Should I Do to Prepare: Nothing! You are not expected to be familiar with the problem in advance. Just show up, ready to try something different.

Background: Coderetreat is a worldwide pattern designed to hone software skills and design practices through repeated attempts to build an implementation of a well-known software problem. Unit testing and Test-Driven Development will be emphasized as key practices. Developers use pair programming and discussion to exchange knowledge, and additional constraints are given throughout the day to emphasize good design concepts and practices.
