Additional Information
It has been 50 years since the death of iconic Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1976, and his reputation has never been higher. His brand of humanist, organic modernism still has an enormous amount to teach the latest generation of architects. In July this year, 13 Aalto projects across Finland were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ian Macready will explore the legacy and work of the three Aaltos: Alvar and his two wives, Aino and Elissa, who ran the Aalto studio throughout its 70-year history. From glassware and lighting to experimental summer cottages and monumental works of architecture, Ian will examine their lives and the studio that spanned many of the extraordinary events of the twentieth century.
