The ‘8 Salvation’ Ride

This ride is organised and lead by our Ride Leader Marloes Veldkamp. In the 'Kempen' are 8 little villages located which names are ending on '-sel'. These villages are: Duizel (former known as Duijsel), Eersel, Hulsel, Knegsel, Netersel, Reusel, Steensel and Wintelre (in spoken language: 'Wintersel').

These 8 should thank their 'nickname' (the 8 salvations) to the Dutch militaries which were in this area during the Belgian Rising around 1830. There was a lot of poverty, and in Dutch Dialect it's called 'selligheden' (armzaligheid). Sarcasm was used to change this into something positive, therefore they renamed the 8 villages into the 8 salvations. Nowadays the villages have a lovely sand ground, and it’s a beautiful place to live. Therefore we are going to cycle through these 8 villages!
