Additional Information

This walk lasts for three hours, with a break, and takes in monolithic railway architecture, graffitied buildings, light industry, canals, artist studios, victorian urinals, repurposed factories, forgotten cathedrals, spectacular city views, neo-pagan stone circles and the mysterious terminating viaduct, ending at a proper Irish pub.

Digbeth is an inner-city district with a history of resisting regeneration. Turn the corner from the shiny Bullring and you'll find yourself in what first appears to be an urban wasteland but which is surprisingly alive and vibrant. You guide, artist and photographer Pete Ashton, has been exploring Digbeth for over a decade and will regale you with the myths, legends, facts and lies about this weird little area while you photograph its glories.

After the walk you will be invited to share your SD card with the group so we can learn from each other's experiences. Low-resolution copies of your photos will be shared on Dropbox with other walkers and will go towards a collective authorship artwork by Pete Ashton, showing Digbeth as seen by many eyes at once. This is entirely optional.

  • Suitable for: All levels of photography and all cameras.
  • Accessibility: Mostly pavements and canal towpaths. Pretty good accessibility.
  • Starting point: Curzon St Station steps, by the Woodman Pub, at 12pm.
  • Ends: Spotted Dog pub near Custard Factory.

Please bring snacks / drinks as we won't necessarily be passing shops on the walk, though we will end at a pub!
