ABOUT THE BOOK: In All in Stride, Johanna Garton tells the gripping and inspiring stories of Elvin Kibet and Shadrack Kipchirchir. Beginning with their upbringing in Kenya, Garton follows the runners through their journeys to the United States, running for Division 1 universities, their blossoming romance as college students, and ultimately their service as U.S. soldiers and professional runners. More than just a running story, All in Stride takes readers behind the scenes to explore the difficulties Elvin and Shadrack faced, including adjusting to an entirely new culture in the U.S., bigotry and intolerance, the stresses and joys of global competitions like the Olympics, joining the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program, and discovering the ever-changing landscape of what it means to be an American.

MEET THE PANELISTS:

Johanna Garton is a sportswriter, distance runner, mother, and cross-country coach. She began running on the dirt roads surrounding her family’s farmhouse in Wisconsin at age seven and continued running through college, where she competed for Syracuse University as a walk-on. Johanna has pursued her love of endurance sports, running more than twenty marathons including five finishes at the Boston Marathon and in 2022 she trekked to Everest Base Camp. Prior to focusing on sports writing, Johanna worked in immigration law, nonprofit management, and college adjunct teaching. A product of the first generation to be impacted by the passage of Title IX, she's passionate about mentoring girls and young women through their journeys in sports.

Lindsey Hein is a top rated podcast host, race announcer and relatable voice in women's running. She is the host and co-host of two of the most popular podcasts for runners in the Country - I'll Have Another with Lindsey Hein Podcast and The Relay Podcast. Lindsey is also the Mom of four and hosts the podcast for parents "Why is Everyone Yelling?" She has run 17 marathons, completed one half ironman and has coached hundreds of runners to Boston Qualifiers and PRs over the past 10 years. She is also the team coach for the nonprofit Every Mother Counts. Lindsey is passionate about creating and sharing a realistic approach to work, family and fitnes.

Elvin Kibet is originally from a small village in Kenya, where she excelled in high school, earning a full scholarship to the University of Arizona where she obtained a degree in public health. At Arizona she was a seven-time NCAA All-American and set the 5000 meter school record, which still stands today. Elvin competed at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in the 10,000 meters and recently in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Elvin has devoted herself to serving the United States as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, where she is currently stationed in Ft Carson, Colorado Springs with the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

Brenna Detra was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois and currently trains in Boston, MA. She attended the University of Wisconsin and was a 2x NCAA qualifier in the 400 hurdles. Post collegiately, she made the jump to the 800 and became the 71st American woman ever to break 2 mins. Most recently, she competed and made a global final at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. She loves spending time with her family, shopping, eating, and everything sports. She is currently represents Oiselle and is focused on chasing her dream of becoming an Olympian.

Briana (Bri) Boehmer began her running journey in high school. She glimpsed the possibility of competing at an elite level in college, but injury led her to explore other endurance activities (she may have completed an Ironman or two). She didn't run her first open marathon until the age of 42. Surprising herself, she finished with an impressive time of 2:33:20 at the 2021 California International Marathon, setting a masters course record and securing her spot in the elite field of the Boston Marathon. Bri is on a mission to prove that aging shouldn't stop anyone from going after big goals, and she was one of five athletes selected for Oiselle's 2024 Year of the Underbird marathon program. In addition to her running pursuits, Bri is a seasoned entrepreneur focused on businesses that improve our well-being. Her current startup addresses food waste. She also teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado-Boulder and serves on the Board of Directors for Startup Colorado.
