Strengthening Relations Between University of Galway and South Africa

A world statesman that is globally respected as a symbol of resistance against injustice, Nelson Mandela is an honorary graduate of University of Galway. Join us as we remember the historic day in 2003 when Nelson Mandela, Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws at the University. Over 1,200 attended the conferring ceremony in Áras na Mac Léinn and almost 3,000 well-wishers lined the route of the Academic Procession.

The event will be opened by the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Helen Maher and a keynote address by the South African Ambassador to Ireland, Ms. Mabet van Rensburg. Followed by a panel discussion ‘Strengthening relations between University of Galway and South Africa’ that will be chaired by Dr Helen Maher.
