New Tech DEI August 2022 Monthly Meeting

8/25/22 10:30am-11:30am PDT

Join us to participate in a safe space where you can share and learn about deeper and real diversity, equality and inclusion topics that you may not have any other place to talk about these issues and solutions.

This month's presenter, Dr. Nile Wilson joins us from Microsoft. In this month's session, Dr. Wilson will share how her experiences as a Black and Asian woman in 2020 catalyzed the founding of a grassroots D&I initiative focused on improving representation during the hiring process at Microsoft. She will also share key learnings about starting and scaling D&I initiatives in the workplace.

Tyrone Cunningham will facilitate the session (occurs the 4th Thursday of every month at 10:30am). The event is open to anyone wanting to make real change happen. If you have a standing meeting invite for this event on your calendar please delete it.

**To be sure you can join us, save the updated Zoom link that is shared when you register. If you have friends or colleagues who are interested, please share the link! **

We believe the PNW is: A region where women and underrepresented minorities are able to pursue opportunities to participate productively in ways that are meaningful for them and that contribute to our local economy and society, and where employers and community organizations have a multitude of ways to create and improve real opportunities for those wanting opportunity and facing bias.

As Margaret Mead said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

Speaker Bio Dr. Nile Wilson is a Data & Applied Scientist 2 in Industry Solutions at Microsoft, developing and implementing Machine Learning solutions for enterprise customers. In addition to data science, She is passionate about improving diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Dr. Wilson developed the Cultural Experience Program to improve employee representation and diversity during the hiring process at Microsoft and beyond. With a background in biomedical engineering, her aim is to advance technology to positively impact human health while being mindful of the unintended uses and consequences of tools developed. Through Microsoft’s Responsible AI principles, she naturally builds this practice into her work while developing ML systems. Whether it’s an assistive medical device or an algorithm to help with business operations, she strongly believes in understanding the societal context and potential impact while developing technology. Tech does not exist in a vacuum, so it should not be developed in one either.
