Digital for Planet Webinar - Sustainable Next-Generation Internet Horizon Europe
The Sustainable Next Generation Internet Horizon Europe webinar aims to gather researchers, innovators and policy makers that across a number of communities are at work to ensure a sustainable, resilient and human centric future internet.
The main objective is to identify research and innovation challenges and opportunities in view of the upcoming Horizon Europe Calls.
With the dominating prevalence of social media and the dependence on the internet brought upon by Covid-19 pandemic, there is an even greater need for the next generation Internet to be human centric. This means to give end-users full control over their data, ensure everyone has secure and trustworthy network and data access through advanced technologies, and deal responsibly with natural resources. Internet governance, technical and web standard setting bodies in particular, continue to play a major role in steering the community towards sustainability. Every email sent, every picture stored, and every datapoint collected has an impact, as long as it is kept and processed in the cloud. The internet already uses 9% of global energy, a total that by some of the most extreme estimates could go up to as much as 23% of global greenhouse emissions by 2030.
The Sustainable Next-Generation Internet Horizon Europe webinaris gathering top experts from the European Commission, industry and academia to present and discuss how energy-efficient technologies, mechanisms, and policies must be put in place at several levels to ensure a safe, resilient and sustainable Internet.
Relevant Horizon Europe initiatives will be presented, as well as concrete activities planned by the Digital for Planet – D4P Sustainable Next-Generation Internet Working Group, in preparation of upcoming Horizon Europe Calls.
