The Platform Business Strategy: a Practical Workshop for Product Leaders
Online (Zoom) — 2x 2h30 — Late 2022
From Airbnb to Uber, platform businesses aren't new. Also called marketplaces or multi-sided platforms, these products share distinct business model characteristics. In this workshop, I'll use clear language and familiar examples to convey the key concepts of platform businesses. You’ll be encouraged to follow the examples by applying these concepts as we go, to either a well-known platform company or your own.

Additional Information
Who it's for
Any product manager or product leader jumping into a role in a platform product. They might be more or less experienced in product in general, but relatively new to multi-sided platform products. They might be either kickstarting the product, or taking an existing platform product to a new chapter. It is particularly aimed at people in pre-product-market fit products.
Key takeaways
In the workshop, you will
- start to think about your business under the specific lens of platforms, and identified your platform’s participants;
- consider your platform’s Core Job and in which aspects is their need unmet by their current solution(s);
- identify the network effects impacting your platform and the role of curation in controlling some of those effects;
- devise tactics you can use to break out of the “chicken and egg” standstill and kickstart the flywheel of positive network effects;
- consolidate what it takes for your platform to be a valuable, usable and feasible product, tackling platform-specific feasibility risks like multihoming and disintermediation;
- use the Platform Business Strategy Canvas to put all of the above together in a structured manner to then play your platform-specific Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats against each other.
You will walk out of the workshop:
- with a basic vision and product strategy for your platform business to kickstart conversations with your team and stakeholders; and
- better equipped to learn more advanced aspects from deeper references, as you execute and iterate your strategy and grow your platform.
