Introduction to Systems and Boundaries

18:00 - 21:00

Welcome to the first IxDA Dublin event of 2020 ๐ŸŽŠ! In this event, Firat Toroglu, service and systems design capability lead at Fjord, will be running a mini-workshop to help the Dublin community explore Systems Design, a relatively new and emerging design capability. There will be DRINKS ๐Ÿปandย ๐Ÿ•PIZZAย ๐Ÿ•!

Why systems design?

Digital transformation to intelligent systems has increased the impact that platforms, products and services have on our lives. Consequently, as designers, we are evolving from being experts on digital user interfaces to strategic design experts, who need to focus on critical systems design.

The tricky question is Are there missing components inside a system that may be overlooked in design thinking? As a result of this evolution, putting humans in the centre of an eco-system may not bring the change that we desire. Humans must be approached as a crucial part of a complex system, not as the centre of everything. So the next question we should ask ourselves is How do we see complex systems as a whole and more importantly, how do we draw their boundaries? In this short workshop, we use systems thinking to navigate complexity and bring value to the system as a whole.

Having systems mindset can help to:

  • Identify the components of the system and their interconnection
  • Define the system boundaries
  • Understand the real purpose of the system, rather than the stated purpose
