BIG SEMINAR DAY - SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3RD, 2017

Sara and David will jointly host an all-day seminar at dlr LexIcon in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday December 3rd (with all attendees getting David's 8 hour "Lighting in Layers" video course on a USB key to keep). David's seminar is "Beyond f/stops and shutter speeds" and Sara's seminar presentation is "Behind the portrait", and both will be like no photography seminar you've attended before and will leave you with plenty to consider in how you approach your photography, how you interact with your subjects, and how you value your skills as a photographer. Full details of the seminars are below.

SEMINAR - SUNDAY DECEMBER 3RD - BEYOND F/STOPS & SHUTTER SPEEDS (Finding a meaningful path as a photographer) - David Hobby

David Hobby Seminar

You have a nice camera and you understand f/stops and shutter speeds. You might even be comfortable using light. Now what? Surely photography has to be about more than learning the next trick - or purchasing the next shiny piece of kit. What makes you happy as a photographer? Is happiness even your goal? What about money? Are the two goals mutually exclusive? What do you want to do with your camera? Do you even know? Do you want to change the world, or maybe just change yourself? This session won't be about composition, exposure or lighting (okay, maybe a little bit about lighting). Instead, we'll step outside our comfort zones and examine what is possible through our photography. This will require a change of perspective. It will mean challenging some long-held assumptions. It may cause you to change your compass point - or to create one for the very first time and most importantly, to learn how to follow it.

In a world where acquiring skills and ability, much like acquiring gear, can become a way to indefinitely avoid figuring out what you want to actually do with those skills, this seminar gives you guidance on how to put that gear and those skills to use.

SEMINAR - SUNDAY DECEMBER 3RD - BEHIND THE PORTRAIT - Sara Lando

Sara Lando Seminar

Pressing the shutter is just a small part of a complex process that happens each time you get a person in front of your camera.

The technical aspects of portrait photography can be learnt pretty quickly, but what most people find overwhelming about shooting people is everything that can’t be controlled with a knob or a switch: hopefully you won’t be one of those people any more, at the end of this half-day seminar.

It starts with finding the right subjects to shoot and convincing them to take part in some weird scenario you have in mind: how do you communicate your ideas in a way that makes people thrilled to be shot by you? How do you make sure they show up and leave happy and excited? How do you take control of your set, pose your subjects in a way that flatters them without looking forced? How do you deal with the unexpected and still bring home your shot? How do you connect with your model and get them to emote in front of your camera? How do you get rid of the “standard photo face” people seem to make as soon as they see a camera?
