” Perhaps the most truly original voice in Irish jazz.” - Sunday Tribune
Mike Nielsen, Guitar
Brian Questa, Double bass
Shane O'Donovan, Drums/Electronics
Guitarist, composer, educator and author, Mike Nielsen is noted for his innovative performances and research. He has shared the stage with many international stars including Dave Liebman, Larry Coryell, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler, Dominique Di Piazza and Paul Wertico. As a soloist he has toured extensively and opened for John McLaughlin in Vicar St. on his first visit to Dublin.
Mike’s project Sound Recipes has included solo, quartet, and trio records, exploring rich ingredients for improvisation including microtonality, Indian, Caribbean, Irish and African music - a delicious mix.
Here in trio format, with longstanding collaborators Shane O’Donovan on drum and electronics, and Brian Questa on bass, Mike brings his exploratory approach to the intimate listening space at The Cooler for an evening of inventive and adventurous music.
Mike’s pioneering work on microtonality features in The Contemporary Guitar by Emmy Award winning guitarist John Schneider. In 2016, German publishers, Schott, published his book on rhythm as part of their new Jazz Handbook Series. A lecturer in Jazz at TU Dublin, Mike initiated a Masters in Jazz Performance programme and created TUD’s jazz guitar syllabus. His solo and original music is performed on a classical guitar and is influenced by an eclectic musical taste including jazz, classical, flamenco, Latin, African, rock and Indian music.
