Additional Information

The inaugural Annual Symposium will feature industry leading speakers including:

  • Wallace J Nichols – author of Blue Mind which reveals "The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do"

  • Michael Bomford – a faculty member in the Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. His work focuses on organic and sustainable agriculture systems suitable for adoption by small farms operating with limited resources. His projects examine practical ways to reduce food system energy use and meet farm energy needs using renewable resources produced on-farm.

  • HP Singh – A local expert in the economics and potential for electric vehicles to work with utilities to manage excess electricity developed from renewable energy. His talk will be titled "Nebraska's EV Future."

  • Aubrey Streit-Krug – Director of Ecosphere Studies at The Land Institute, whose mission, in part, is to seek to develop an agriculture that will save soil from being lost or poisoned, while promoting a community life at once prosperous and enduring.

  • Tom Lenz – A fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine with a Master of Science in Anthropology who will be talking about the need for medical anthropologists in healthcare.

The primary goal for the symposium is to raise awareness about the serious threats that face humanity in the face of climate change and economic inequality and ways to build resilience around them. The symposium will seek participation from Nebraska and surrounding states including faculty from colleges and universities interested in the symposium subject matter; undergraduate students; individuals and leaders from organizations and groups related to food, energy, and water resilience. Attendance is anticipated to reach 100 to 150 guests. The symposium will include opportunities for students to present research and project-based work and a permaculture workshop on Saturday afternoon.

Following the Symposium, join us for the "Permaculture Workshop" scheduled Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 1:30 - 5:00 pm. Lunch will be provided for registered workshop attendees from 12:00 - 1:30 pm.
