Ann Mahon, Senior Lecturer in Healthcare and Public Sector Management, MBS

Abstract

In July 2014 and January 2015 Ann Mahon attended the Global Colloquium on Participant-Centred Learning. The programme was delivered in two workshops at Harvard Business School in Boston. The first workshop, in July 2014, focused on the use of cases in teaching, particularly on MBA programmes. The second workshop, in January 2015, was concerned with the science, art and craft of writing cases. This seminar offers some personal insights into participating in this global programme reflecting upon:

• The diversity of the participants
• The content of the workshops
• The delivery styles and mechanisms
• The “Harvard” experience
• Personal and Professional development
• Application to teaching practice and research

About the speaker

Ann Mahon is a senior lecturer in the Health Management Group at Manchester Business School. She started her academic career as a medical sociologist and health services researcher before moving into management education. She has extensive experience in the design and delivery of management and leadership programmes for senior and middle managers working in health and social care and the wider public sector. Ann is currently MBS Programme Director for the MSc in Healthcare Leadership. This is a part time 2 year programme commissioned by the NHS Leadership Academy, designed and delivered by a KPMG led consortium and jointly accredited by the Universities of Manchester and Birmingham. In the first academic year of the programme 2013-2014 1400 participants were recruited to the programme. Currently Ann’s research portfolio includes a realist synthesis of action learning as a management intervention and her book “Learning and Personal Development for Public Service Managers” will be published by Routledge, as part of the Routledge Masters in Public Management, in 2016.
