Imelda Bates, Professor in Clinical Tropical Haematology, and Tanith Palmer, Research Assistant Department of International Public Health, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM)

The primary aim of this seminar is to help inform discussions within the healthcare management group at Manchester Business School about how the School, the group, and individuals within it, might strengthen their capacity for conducting impactful, high quality healthcare management research.

Professor Imelda Bates will reflect on her over 14 years consultancy experience of health research capacity strengthening, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing out learning that might be useful for the UK context. Issues covered may include: developing a strong research culture; improving training of researchers; integrating research for health within health systems; translating research into action; and evaluating the impact of research for health.

Tanith Palmer will outline a research proposal, being developed by researchers from both LSTM and MBS. This research will consider how the NHS organisations can derive maximum benefit from international institutional partnerships that aim to support volunteering in low and middle income countries by NHS staff, including both clinicians and managers. Potential benefits to individual participants include enhanced management and teamworking skills, while organisations may improve their relationships with staff and local communities.

Members of the group will have an opportunity to contribute to and strengthen the proposal
