A Brief Introduction to Machine Learning

Scikit-learn is an open-source machine learning software mostly written in Python programming language, designed to interoperate with the Python numerical and scientific libraries NumPy and SciPy. Started in 2007 during a Google Summer of Code, developed by the data scientist David Cournapeau, this machine learning library has many tools for data mining and data analysis, that is accessible to anyone and reusable in various contexts.

As you can imagine, machine learning is a very powerful tool, making impossible that you can be a geek on machine learning in 4 hours! But in this talk, we want you to learn the basics of it with the help of Eduardo Câmara, who worked with Machine Learning algorithms to manipulate audio and triggering emotional states in games.

The price of each ticket is 5,00 €, and it can be bought on this platform! There is only one type of ticket, and It includes full access to the tech talk and its contents, a certificate of participation and a coffee-break, where the ideas can be shared and discussed.

About Machine Learning:

With machine learning, we could change the world. But… let’s take it slow. First, let’s talk about machine learning: is the scientific study of algorithms that computer systems use in order to perform a task without explicit instructions, relying on patterns and inference instead. There’s a lot of tools that allow us to create systems based on “training data”, but on this workshop, only the scikit-learn will be the used tool.

Scikit-learn features various classification, regression and clustering algorithms, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It is designed to interoperate with the Python numerical and scientific libraries NumPy and SciPy. Besides the fact that was created 12 years ago, it’s is a tool that is described as “well maintained and popular”.

A lot of worldwide companies use scikit-learn to improve their services, through standard algorithms for prediction tasks, such as Spotify, Evernote and Booking.com, to improve their service quality and user satisfaction.

If you are curious about this tool, you can check more information and documentation through this URL: https://scikit-learn.org/. In this way, you will improve your skills in order to change our world!

About the event:

The event will take place on 7th of September 2019, at 09:30 am, in the Jesuits' College of Funchal (https://goo.gl/maps/S1PGEamLtm42), one of the most remarkable historic buildings of the island, with more than 400 years of existence.

This workshop is intended for people who don’t have any experience with Machine Learning (ML) but is very curious to give the first steps at ML development.

The workshop will be tended in English. Despite this, there, you will be invited to ask questions (don’t be afraid of), to suggest, to try, to fail, to play… in Portuguese (if you can’t speak English) or in English.

In the following days, after the end of the workshop, we will send to your email your certificate of participation in the workshop, so you can share with your friends what have you just conquered!

What do I need to bring with me?

Just bring a computer with the peripherals that you use on an average day. Further information about the software that you need to have pre-installed on your computer, for the workshop, will be sent to your email a few days before it. Thus, in the day, we can jump right into this machine learning library.

We will provide you with a free wireless connection and access to all the files used during the talk so that you can review and try it at home.

Program:

09:30 – Conference registration;

10:00 – Workshop: A brief introduction to Machine Learning (part I);

11:00 – Coffee-break;

11:30 – Workshop: A brief introduction to Machine Learning (part II);

14:00 – Wrap up.

The workshop will start strictly at 10:00, but the rest of the program is just something that we got it down and may be changed on the day, according to the attendees.

For the conference registration, you don't need to print your ticket. Just show us the e-ticket that you received when you bought the ticket on ti.to.

Speaker:

Eduardo Gomes

Eduardo Gomes has a Masters degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Madeira, where he worked with audio manipulation for triggering emotional states in games by utilizing Machine Learning algorithms. He also worked as a consultant, assisting the development of interactive cross-platform music sheet renderer and player.

Eduardo currently works at M-ITI, focusing his work on non-intrusive load monitoring using Machine Learning techniques. He has a broad language knowledge in C# and Python as well as hands-on experience in Unity3D and the TensorFlow framework.
