Join us for our April Dundee Data Meetup featuring an exciting exploration into learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic and the NHS. We'll hear from Jenni Woods, Head of Health & Business Intelligence at NHS Tayside, for a talk on learnings from the pandemic and NHS data. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Jenni, Lesley-Anne Kelly (Editor of the Press Associations local data journalism team) and Jack Gilmore (Senior Platform Engineer at NHS Education for Scotland and Co-founder of Open Data Scotland).

Covid and NHS data - what we had to learn and fast!

Jenni Woods, Head of Health & Business Intelligence at NHS Tayside

Jenni will be exploring the Covid-19 data and reporting story from within NHS Tayside, including:

  • What happened from 13th March 2020 to focus all data minds around Covid reporting and how we used our data input systems.
  • The data and intelligence we needed to understand, capture and report on.
  • The toolkits and techniques we used to track the impact of Covid within the hospitals, with a focus on patients, beds, predictions and data visualisation to deliver key messages to the masses.

Panel discussion - 5 years on from the pandemic

Join us for a panel discussion reflecting on the fifth anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic and how it impacted the data community with conversations from:

Speaker bios

Jenni Woods, Head of Health & Business Intelligence at NHS Tayside

Jenni is Head of Health & Business Intelligence within NHS Tayside, and has worked in the NHS for over 20 years. She leads a team of information analysts and dashboard developers who use data to drive patient flow, performance and improvement throughout the hospitals. Jenni is a mum of 2 living in Perth, and really enjoys working with clinical and managerial teams to support an evidence-based and data-driven health board. She is passionate about working with others to design information products which support decision making, help gain better insight and improve outcomes.

Lesley-Anne Kelly, Editor at the Press Associaton

Lesley-Anne Kelly is an international award winning data journalist.

She is currently the editor of the Press Associations local data journalism team but during the pandemic she was one of only a small handful of data journalists in Scotland trying to make sense of the ever-changing covid data landscape.

She is passionate about democratising data and making it more accessible through storytelling and data visualisation.

Jack Gilmore, Senior Platform Engineer at NHS Education for Scotland and Co-founder of Open Data Scotland

Jack is a full-stack software developer based in Scotland, with experience in both the public sector and academia. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computing Science and Spanish from the University of Stirling in 2019. As an advocate for free and open-source software, many of his projects involve the consumption or production of open data.

In 2021, Jack co-founded Open Data Scotland, a crowdsourced open data portal that aggregates datasets across Scotland, making them searchable from a single reference point. The project aims to help users find data sources, understand the open data landscape in Scotland, showcase projects utilizing these data, and connect stakeholders in the open data ecosystem.

Jack's contributions to the open-source and open data community were recognized in November 2022 when he received the OpenUK award in the Young Person category. And in 2023, Open Data Scotland won the Belonging OpenUK Award.Beyond Open Data Scotland, Jack has worked on projects like OpenWasteMap, a web application that uses data from OpenStreetMap to display recycling center locations, their accepted materials, and opening hours.He has also shared his expertise at events such as the State of Open Conference in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
