Diving Back onto the Bronze Bell Wreck

In 2021 MSDS Marine were commissioned by the CHERISH Project to undertake a programme of diving on the Bronze Bell protected wreck site. The wreck was last visited by an archaeological contractor in 2004. In addition, this visit was the first to assess the impact of climate change on the wreck. In this talk Alison James from MSDS Marine will give an update on the diving fieldwork and discuss the findings.

The Bronze Bell wreck was found by divers in 1978 off the Merioneth coast. The name of the ship is unknown but has been re-named after the bronze bell dated 1677 found on the wreck.

CHERISH (Climate, Heritage and Environments of Reefs, Islands, and Headlands) is a 6-year European-funded Ireland-Wales project, bringing together four partners across two nations: the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the Discovery Programme: Centre for Archaeology and Innovation Ireland, Aberystwyth University: Department of Geography and Earth Sciences, and Geological Survey, Ireland. The project began in January 2017 and will run until June 2023. It will benefit from €4.9 million through the Ireland-Wales 2014-2020 Programme.
