Samhradh na gCruitirí – The Summer of the Harpers - Le Ceoldrama na nÓG
Set during the flax harvest in Ulster in 1792, the story follows a young Spailpín, or seasonal labourer, who falls in love with Bríd, a hedge-school teacher awaiting the return of Captain Quinn, a mercenary soldier returning from Europe.
Their story unfolds alongside the arrival of a mysterious blind harper and against the backdrop of the historic 1792 Belfast Harp Festival. With music composed by Siubhán Ó Dubháin and performed by young people from counties Down, Armagh, Louth, Monaghan, Cavan, Donegal and Dublin, Samhradh na gCruitirí is a historically rich Irish-language musical, interweaving traditional melodies and tunes with modern arrangements and staging.
Samhraidh na gCruitiri is made possible by funding from the Shared Island Fund and with support from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich
