The film FAT CHOI SPIRIT is a typical “Lunar New Year Celebration” film. Hong Kong people has a custom of watching films of this special genre during the new year, and the film usually involve the main character getting a handsome and often windfall fortune.

Hong Kong pop culture icon Andy Lau stars as a legendary Mahjong player in the film. Years ago his crave for Mahjong cost his family their entire fortune. Now Andy’s estranged brother gets set up by Sean and Cherie, and Andy decides to revenge for his brother on the Mahjong table. Meanwhile, his ex-girlfriend, failing to win his love, curses him for never winning. Oddly her words come true... The film was one of Hong Kongers’ favourite movies for Lunar New Year, and sound bites from the film is still often quoted even today.
