Aberdeen Data Meetup 04 Feb 2025
Tonight we feature two talks at the first event to be held in our new premises!
1. "Standards – who needs them?*" - Julian Tait\, Open Data Manchester
2. Using data to empower local readerships" - Ema Sabljak, Data Journalist
Note: both speakers will be presenting remotely.
1. Julian's talk is about Open Data Manchester’s journey into the open standards for data world\, and how once you delve into this nichest of worlds things are never the same again.
It will give an overview of open standards, how we first got involved in them and how we used user research and system analysis to understand the key components needed for the standards we have created and ones in development, that are tackling supply chain data exchange to promote a more resilient and circular economy.
BIO Julian, who began his career as a music photographer, is the co-founder and CEO of Open Data Manchester CIC, a not-for-profit organisation established in 2010. The organisation aims to help communities and organisations better understand and utilise data.
He oversees the development of several open standards for data including: · The Open3P data standard for the packaging value chain, which facilitates the exchange of packaging data between organisations, promoting process and resource efficiencies to reduce packaging's environmental impact and reducing costs. · The Open Product data standard for batteries and electrical and electronic equipment. · The Open Standard for Fashion and Textiles Data, which is currently in development.
He leads the development of equitable data stewardship organisations through the Data Cooperative Working Group.

2. Ema's talk will focus on providing data journalism for local or even hyperlocal audiences. Specifically the ways we go above and beyond where open data may not be local enough to interest readers. The talk will focus on some of the most prominent projects from our data team\, including our high streets project\, investigations into vacant unit ownership and derelict land\, and potentially our latest tracker for A96 crashes.
All of these have different data collection methods and provide insight into some of the constraints we face as journalists serving local communities.
BIO Ema moved from Croatia to Scotland in 2017 to study journalism and has lived in Glasgow since then. After working as a live reporter for nearly four years, she joined the award-winning DC Thomson data team in 2023. The team most recently won the Best Data Visualisation award in for their high street tracking project WAN IFRA's Digital Media Awards Europe.

If you select a physical ticket and it happens that we cannot meet physically you will have to attend the Zoom session.
Those attending the physical space meetup should attend at 6pm for pizza and drinks. The talk will be from 6.30pm. Doors will be locked from 6.30pm.
**If tickets are sold out please do not attend as you will be refused entry without a ticket. **
