How Product Managers Create Sustainable Value
Products need to be sustainable to meet new legal and customer requirements. This simple fact has huge impacts on product management. The goal of green product management is to minimize environmental impacts of a product during and after its life cycle, i.e. reducing waste, maximize resource efficiency (which includes an optimized carbon footprint), using toxic-free ingredients and environment-friendly procedures. In theory this is a win-win situation for brands (new markets, competitive advantage, image, loyalty), customers (quality, maintenance, health) and society (jobs, resources, environment). But high development costs can be risky if sustainable products and services only serve niche markets, especially under the impression of economic crisis and inflation.
