BLAND - Bizarro' Variety

Leave your problems at the door and be part of something eyebrow raising and smirk jerking. BLAND is a show that has all the grandeur of something extraordinary but still feels like something you can wrap yourself in. It’s a hangout, it’s a show, it’s a night out where familiarity meets the thrill of uncertainty. A cocktail of four acts, live music, poetry, stand up and sketch. Also – vinyl bingo. Support emerging talent.

Additional Information

Hannah Elspeth Wood

So incredibly sneaky. I've been blessed to know Hannah Elspeth Wood for some years now, and I had no idea about her talents with the pen. Hannah’s poetry transports you to a fantasy world, painted with the colours of love, road trips, and frogs. Calling all fans of poetry and storytelling: she is Norwich’s best-kept secret — and we’re revealing it on the 21st of November. @hannah_elspeth24 is a poet and actor based in Norwich. She works at the National Centre for Writing and at UEA, where she also studied Literature and Creative Writing. As an actor, she has performed at Sewell Barn, The Maddermarket Theatre, and at various regional venues with Burnt Coffee Theatre Company. Her poetry explores love, heartbreak, climate catastrophe, and how to stop every man you meet from subjecting you to his Matt Berry impression.

Ross Pearson

You know it. He shows it. We love it. He’s a veteran in this game, and by the love of gawd, the way he pulls his cigarettes proves it. Vinyl Bingo is proudly sponsored by @rosspearsonart this month. Here’s hoping he takes on the banks this time! Ross is an artist and filmmaker from Edinburgh based in Norwich. For roughly 18 years he has been producing videos assembled from fragments of existing television, film and assorted video ephemera with surreal, satirical or scatological intent. Previous video work has been described as “The kind of dream you might have if you spent the day drinking Red Bull and reading Private Eye and then fell asleep watching an Adam Curtis documentary”. He has exhibited work across the UK and in mainland Europe. He is our inhouse artist and sponsor of Vinyl Bingo, and we adore him very much. Altogether now, “we adore him very much!”

The Earlham Bus Incident

Norwich’s premier sketch troupe, The Earlham Bus Incident, brings together the finest comedy talent the fine city has to offer. With seven stellar shows under their belts, this bus shows no signs of stopping. Hop on board for a ride filled with superbly silly sketch comedy! Will you meet Unthanks’ most credible detective, Mona Ravona? Or Schmevil Schmurderer, the evilest person everrr? Perhaps Big Foot will make an appearance—or even Judge Foodie! The cast of @earlham_sketch come from all walks of life. They originally met under a bridge in NR3, huddling around an old oil bin for warmth. They’ve come a long way since then and are now one of Norwich’s hottest sketch groups. Most surprising of all? None of them do drugs— they’re just a little bit crazy! Get a taste of their unique brand of comedy at @bla.n.d and keep an eye out for their next show! Everyone who’s been leaves with their sides hurting from laughter.

Alexander Carson

Alexander Carson is a non-binary singer-songwriter/composer based in Norwich Norfolk, United Kingdom, they spend the majority of their time bumbling around the house making obtuse sounds, comforted and accompanied by two ambivalent cats, one over-excited dog, and one long-suffering partner. Carson first picked up the piano at age 4 (which is especially difficult considering the weight) and was classically trained, their music reflects this discipline and sounds like a cross between Chopin and Rufus Wainwright. @alexandercarsonmusic is inspired by the mundanity of modernity and aims to articulate the absurdity of human existence in their music. This is all presented with a surrealist sense of humour to soften the often melancholic timbre of the music.

Essentially their music is trying to set one Oscar Wilde quote to music: "Life is much too important a thing ever to talk seriously about.”
