Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Bell Geekfest 2020 happening?

5099 Creekbank Rd, Building C, Mississauga, Ontario L4W 5N2

What’s the event schedule like?

The event will be taking place from 8 am - 10 pm. We’ll be sharing the details closer to the event. You can expect lots of talks, fun events, and great food!

How much does it cost?

Attendance is entirely free, and the food is on us. But we’ll have to ask for your time!

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a day or a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer, you don’t need to have a team prior to going, and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in Computer Science.

I’m not a coder... can I apply?

Hackathons are not just for programmers or people with coding experience! Well-rounded projects need students from different disciplines. If you are a passionate learner looking to build something cool, we want you to apply! We’ll be providing mentors and running workshops throughout the day.

Can I participate?

If you are a college student, don’t hesitate to apply!

Is there an application process?

Yes! Please apply by completing your registration form via Ti.to.  Once registration closes, we'll let you if you've been selected and send out reminders closer to the event.  If you completed the form but cannot make it anymore, we kindly ask you to void your ticket so that others can have the opportunity to attend.

Do I need a team?

You can hack as one or as a group of up to 4 students! If you don’t have a team yet don’t worry, there will also be a team-building event the-day-of for you, in case you can’t find a team before then!

Do I need to come with an idea?

No. Bell will be providing some challenges for you to pick from.

What will I need?

Be sure to bring a valid ID! The rest will depend on what you will need to work on your project. Here is a list of what we recommend bringing for the event: your laptop, phone, and their respective chargers, any hardware you want to hack on for the day.

Will there be hardware available during the event?

No. You will not need hardware to complete one of the Bell challenges that will be offered.

Will there be workshops or talks?

Of course! We’ll be running an introductory technical workshop and a personal branding workshop. The details of the schedule will be released closer to the event.

Can I work on a past project?

No. You can come with an idea for one of the Bell challenges prior to the event but in order to make things fair, all hacking must take place at the hackathon. Although Bell Geekfest 2020 is not an official MLH Member Event, we still uphold the hackathon rules set forth by MLH.

How are projects judged?

Projects will be judged by our Bell Canada team of technical experts and recruiters. They’ll be presented to judges and be evaluated on multiple things including presentation, creativity, practicality, application, and originality.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

We'll be offering Bell swag, prizes, and interviews! There are a few things we do not encourage; please refer to the MLH Code of Conduct.
