About the event:

We welcome sound, visual artists and designers, media technologists, researchers, female creatives, and curious beginners to join us at the CC4AV MaxMSP Meetup in Berlin.

PREREQUISITES FOR MaxMSP MEETUP #4:

  • A mobile device such as a smartphone, tablet, iPad or iPhone (for learning about accelerometers, UI creation, and to use as a remote control of MaxMSP)
  • Your laptop with Max 7 already installed (free trial or full version)
  • Ableton Live with Max For Live (free trial or full version - this is optional)
  • MiraWeb package, available from the package manager (https://github.com/Cycling74/miraweb)

PART I: REMOTE CONTROL INTERFACES

Musician and producer Carlo Cattano will demonstrate how to use the MiraWeb package to connect devices to a Max host computer, and control parameters remotely. Once connected, we will access accelerometer 3D data and scale, smooth and manipulate it to control audio, video, visuals, and Ableton Live parameters. We will create simple MiraWeb User Interface (UI) to be used through your mobile device, which will be accessible from any browser/platform. The UI will have multi-touch, swipe, and accelerometer support. The system can work both within the same local network, as well as with remote computers (e.g. someone in Berlin could be controlling the patch from their web browser, while someone else in London is running the patch).

PART II: SONIFICATION OF TEXT

Carlo will provide an example of how to sonify—transform text into music—by using a regular expression to trigger keywords and map that to musical notes. The application will be created within a nice UI.

Carlo Cattano is a musician and producer interested in transcultural music exploration and creative coding for intermedia. He has traveled around world through more than 30 countries, including an extended period of living in Istanbul which was dedicated to learning microtonal music systems. In 2016, Carlo settled down in Berlin with the primary focus of going into deeper programming of new expressive interfaces and experimenting with new technologies.

Carlo has already released several Max For Live devices at www.maxforlive.com. Among them: “Leap Motion Mapper” which is coverts hand gestures as mapped with a 3D sensor, converts them into musical parameters (“Leap Motion Mapper” was built with MaxMSP and Ableton). "Turn map" optimizes the expressive potential of phone accelerometer applications such as TouchOSC and MiraWeb. And finally, “Music from the Bible” a project which was partially presented in the MaxMsp Meeting #2 in Berlin, where text from the bible is sonified in real-time with MaxMSP, and turned into musical midi information for Abelton Live.

Carlo is currently working in Berlin as a freelance music producer and performer, some of his collaborations are in the realm of from producing setups for installations and performances, as well as spatialization of audio for Virtual Reality with Unity3D.

About the software: MaxMSP is a development framework which uses visual paradigm and runs on Mac and PC computers. It provides a platform for visual interactive programming, and it is made for creating custom applications dealing with signals and sound, generating video, visuals, and much more. From generating to processing, MaxMSP can handle any kind of data and can connect data networks to sensors, DMX, and any serial devices using USB (including Kinect). It offers a proper and stable environment in which one can map anything to everything. MaxMSP is one of the most used frameworks for designing custom systems for live performances, art installations, scientific prototyping, experimental environments, and interactive applications.

CC4AV MaxMSP Meetup is a monthly event, feel free to contact us if you have any specific topics you want to talk about or projects you would like to present.

This meetup is co-organized by Irina Spicaka (CC4AV) and Mar High (Project A)—advocates of the use of technology for artistic expression.
