The Music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel

Join the Capitol Hill Chorale for "The Music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel" on Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 17 at 4 p.m. at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church.

Composer and pianist Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (Nov. 14, 1805 – May 14, 1847) received the same musical education as her famous brother Felix. According to her father, Hensel's musical talent could be "only an ornament." As a woman, she never received the same recognition of her younger sibling.

In this program, we will shine a light on Hensel’s choral compositions.

We will be joined for this concert by mezzo-soprano Kristen Dubenion-Smith, recognized for her "velvety legato and embracing warmth of sound" (Washington Classical Review).

Dr. Michael Cooper, biographer of both Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, will join the Chorale for a pre-concert lecture on her life and music. The lecture begins 30 minutes before the start of each concert.
