An examination of how sport has been influenced by the changing attitudes in society in the early 19th century and how law shaped the evolution of sport at that time. From a Sunday Observance Act of 1625 which tried to curb participation in sporting and recreational events on a Sunday to Sir William Pultney’s Bill in 1800 which sought to out-law bull baiting, the law has had an impact on sporting events for centuries.

Dr. Paul Rouse is a professor at University College Dublin and has extensively researched and authored texts on the history of Irish and global sport. Dr. Rouse also writes a weekly column for the Irish Examiner newspaper and presents the Examiner Sport podcast on Gaelic football.
