MIDBA CPD: Not Love, Actually... How to combat fraud and broken hearts on the internet

Michael O’Doherty BL will introduce the various types of fraud that take place online, and discuss two overarching issues;

Online anonymity: why it exists, how it fuels fraudulent behaviour, and what can be done about it.

The liability of platforms: can the apps, and social media platforms, on which the activity takes place be held liable the unlawful activity under data protection, privacy and defamation laws?

Idriss Kechida, EU Head of Privacy for the Match Group (match.com, Tinder, Hinge, Plenty of Fish), navigates the shady world of Cupid stunts, and the legal issues surrounding the world of online dating apps. What can go wrong? Why does it occur? What can be done to combat it?

Additional Information

The Media, Internet and Data Protection Bar Association (MIDBA), is a new Specialist Bar Association supported by the Bar of Ireland, is a specialist association for barristers who practice in, or have an interest in, those areas of law. MIDBA seeks to advance knowledge in these dynamic and fast-developing areas of law. Given the seismic changes in the media landscape in recent years, and with many of the largest technology companies having their European headquarters located in Ireland, it is essential that law practitioners are kept up to date on developments in these complex and fast-moving areas of law. MIDBA intend to hold regular seminars to promote awareness of the developing law, as well as an annual conference open to all members of the legal profession and relevant industry professionals, which will consider the major issues pertaining to media, data protection and internet law from the previous 12 months.
