Background

Since 2008, The Bar of Ireland has from time to time hosted a lecture dedicated to the legacy and values of Daniel O’Connell. The lecture serves as an opportunity to speak to not only the legal profession, but also judiciary, public officials and representatives on a contemporary interpretation or theme connected to the life and legacy of Daniel O’Connell and his association with statehood, human rights and the rule of law.

About the Speaker

Michael McGrath is the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection since 2024. He was a TD for Cork South-Central from 2007 to 2024 and served as Minister for Finance from December 2022 - June 2024 and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform from 2020 -2022. In an increasingly complex global environment, his insights on justice and democratic resilience in Europe, especially in the context his role as EU Commissioner will be extremely valuable.
