Soil Searching

Soil Searching is a movement backed by Specialized to support the unsung heroes of mountain biking; the trail builders who tirelessly maintain and shape what our sport is built on.

⁠In 2020, our goal is to host Soil Searching Dig Days once a month, with an aim of encouraging more mountain bikers to give up a morning/afternoon or even a day every few weeks to get involved and help maintain their local trails. ⁠

We'll be posting new Dig Days as and when the dates are finalised, so be sure to keep checking back. We'll also be posting our partner Trail Crew Dig Days here, so instead of having Soil Searching Dig Days once a month, you can hit up the trails and earn your stoke as much as you like!

Please note: Yes, we're backed by Specialized, but that's not to say other brands can't get involved. Come along, pick up a shovel and lets help maintain the trails together. Due to excessive trail damage, this Dig Day has been postponed.

First Soil Searching event of the year! Meet at 09:30 @ The Plough Pub, Abinger Rd, Coldharbour, Dorking RH5 6HD. We'll then walk up/ride up/drive up to Leith Hill Tower, where we'll work on the top section of the trail, which is in dyer need of maintenance.

Bring your riding buddies and don't forget to dress appropriately for the weather. This is a Soil Searching Dig Day, so we'll bring all tools/drinks/snacks, but we'll also have a non-obligatory beer afterwards paid for by the lovely chaps at Specialized!

We'll be building/maintaining with Friends of the Hurtwood (FotH) on sanctioned trails in the main area of Peaslake. Meet time of 09:30 in Walking Bottom Car Park. Drinks and snacks will be provided, plus we'll have a pizza/beer at The Hurtwood afterwards.

Please note: Due to how busy Peaslake is on a weekend, we'll be digging on a Friday. Attending this Dig Day does not mean you have permission to dig on FotH land outside of selected Dig Days due to the land being under private ownership. You will be required to sign a waiver before starting the Dig Day.

We're always on the search for Dig Crews/new locations. When you press register, you'll be asked for your info and a text box will pop up. Enter the location/Dig Crew name/contact number etc there. No Dig Crew is too big or too small.

Please note: we cannot facilitate Dig Days on un-sanctioned, private land. You must get permission from the land owner to dig trails, and we must see proof of this permission before agreeing to organise Dig Days.

Additional Information

At Soil Searching branded Dig Days, everything is provided. We cannot account for partnered Dig Days, so please get in contact with your Dig Crew prior to attending.

All tools will be provided plus we will be handing out some snacks and drinks to keep energy levels up.

A short briefing will take place before we head out onto the trail, this will include details on the planned maintenance and also instruction on how to use the tools.

There is no age limit, we welcome anyone and everyone to get involved even if its just for an hour.

Please check the weather and bring appropriate clothing and footwear. We will build come rain or shine...

Please bring gloves to help with handling the trail tools.

Public liability insurance will be in place for each dig day.
